A visual masterpiece that I couldn't get enough of.
Dune was the movie I was most looking forward to watching this year. I'd seen the original movie from 1984 and was quite excited to see a modern remake of the remarkable story from Frank Herbert.
Much of my high expectations for the film stemmed from it being helmed by up and coming director Denis Villeneuve of Arrival and Blade Runner 2049 acclaim.
I adore his movie style, dedication to detail and cinematography.
Although Denis' Blade Runner 2049 didn't do so well at the box office (largely due to its niche audience and run time of over 3 hours) the movie is still in my top 10 movies of all time.
Dune very much follows the same artistic style and gorgeous visuals that I have come to know and love from this director. It really is an epically beautiful movie.
The cast are incredible too, the acting top notch and the pace and cinematography truly breathtaking.
Dune boasts fantastic performances from Oscar Isaac, Rebecca Ferguson, Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem, Jason Mamoa and Stellan Skarsgård to name but a few.
I am quite partial to a sci-fi film and as a fan I was really spoilt with this film.
Whilst I had forgotten most of the earlier 1984 version, I soon embraced the story as Dune began by introducing itself as a sort of Game of Thrones in Space!
Great family houses with vast lore and history live in this universe and we focus on the Atreides and Harkonnen clans in 'Part One' of this epic adventure.
I wholeheartedly recommend that you go and see this movie in IMAX at the cinema as it is the perfect film for the big screen experience.
The attention to detail, from the worlds to wardrobe is just mesmerising.
Whilst some may feel this movie is a little drawn out and slow to begin with, this is a proper movie goers film. I encourage you to soak in and enjoy the world as much as I did and revel in its detail.
I expect that Dune will become the Star Wars of the modern age if Denis gets part 2 signed off and filmed in the coming years. In fact, this story would make an epic TV series too.
Dune was right up my street and I will be seeing it again as soon as possible.
The Grid gives it 4 out of 5 stars!
