Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings Review

A visual spectacle but not much more than that.

I was quite looking forward to a new 'proper' Marvel release and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings looked quite promising from the trailer.

I went into the cinema with an open mind ready to enjoy whatever Disney had in store for me.

Shang-Chi sure is a visual spectacle with good special effects and CGI but I did find the story a bit lacking.

The backstory of Shang-Chi and his family is not well thought out and sadly lets the film down in many ways.

The lead actor Simu Liu is particularly dull and forgettable unfortunately with no real stand out performance.

Some of the fight scene choreography is exceptional however and did help to make the film a more enjoyable experience.

There is some forced woke agenda and humour sadly. It seems Disney is still struggling to balance that aspect of their movies.

I didn't feel enamoured by the mystical elements of Chinese culture and legend. If anything it felt like a cheap rip off.

I expected a more serious tone, something similar to Captain America's The Winter Soldier which nailed the balance between action, believability and story.

We just didn't get that sadly.

Shang-Chi could have been so much more.

Our final rating - 2.5 stars out of 5.
