The Northman Review

Valhalla awaits for this Vikings familiar story of revenge.

As a big fan of the Amazon Prime show Vikings I was keen to immerse myself once again in the dark, gritty world of Viking rampage.

The trailer for The Northman convinced me that I needed to see this movie. It's glorious use of colour, choreography and epic feel made it unmissable.

Alexander Skarsgård had also built upon his Tarzan physique looking monstrously jacked and I'm not going to lie, that shape is pure goals for us gents at The Grid.

We went into the movie with no expectations but were ready to get lost in it's world.

If you're familiar with Shakespeare's Hamlet then you may be aware that the story was based on the son a Danish King called Amleth. The Northman is Amleth's story.

The films boasts some excellent acting pedigree in Ethan Hawke, Alex Skarsgård, Nicole Kidman and Willem Dafoe.

I would dare to say that they all had a blast filming this quite frankly bonkers film!

The Northman truly embraces all the weird and wonderful of Viking lore and delivers it on a visual extravaganza so much so that you are entranced by the beginning of the film.

It's call-back to visions and dreams are wonderfully interwoven and initially you do really get lost and into the epic feel.

We watch Amleth become a beast of a war machine and his initiation to become a beserker is one of the craziest things I've ever witnessed at the cinema. I loved it.

The second half of the film began the quest of revenge and the introduction of Anya Taylor-Joy as Olga of the Birch Forest.

Both had believable romance and chemistry but the dynamic of revenge started to get a bit distorted the more Olga got involved.

Once Amleth was ready to exact revenge he seemed to lose his skill in battle and that was a bit of a turn off for me.

I wanted to witness utter mayhem and destruction because Amleth was clearly capable of destroying a whole army by himself at this point.

Sadly the story didn't quite work out that way. The visions and story became a touch disjointed towards its end.

The movie is absolutely beautiful and you want to get lost in it but at times it takes you straight you back out and you question what you see.

That being said the film was still very enjoyable. Had the film kept you in its gorgeous dream sequences and action I believe it could have been a contender for film of year.

The Northman has flashes of pure brilliance and is truly a spectacle but it lost its way a bit for us and we were both a little disappointed with the ending.

Worth a watch.
